FAS (Free Alongside Ship)

Abbreviation: FAS

Free Alongside Ship means the seller places the goods alongside the vessel named by the buyer at the agreed port of shipment, for example on the quay or a barge. Risk passes at that moment, and the seller still clears the goods for export. FAS is for sea and inland waterway transport only and is typical for bulk or breakbulk cargo such as timber and steel. It rarely suits containers, which are handed over at the terminal rather than at the ship's side.

  • FOB (Free On Board)

Free On Board means the seller delivers the goods on board the vessel nominated by the buyer at the port of shipment; risk passes once the goods are on board.

  • FCA (Free Carrier)

Free Carrier means the seller hands export-cleared goods to the carrier nominated by the buyer at an agreed place.

  • Incoterms

Incoterms are the ICC rules that set the delivery point, the transfer of risk, and the split of costs and customs duties between seller and buyer.
