Bonded Zone (Kawasan Berikat)
A bonded zone (kawasan berikat) is a bonded storage area for holding and processing goods, mainly for export, where import duty is suspended and import taxes are not collected. Imported raw materials can enter without paying levies up front, but goods in and out are closely supervised by customs. Related facilities include bonded logistics centres and free trade zones such as Batam. If goods are sold into the domestic market, the import levies must be paid.
