About this calculator

A shipping mark is the text and symbols on the side of a carton that link each package to its shipping documents. Warehouse staff, forwarders, customs and the consignee use it to identify goods without opening the packaging. The main mark usually holds the buyer or consignee code inside a diamond or box frame, the destination city or port, the order number, the carton number (for example C/NO. 3 OF 120) and the country of origin. Side marks on another face carry the net and gross weight (N.W./G.W.) and the measurements (MEAS.).

Inconsistent marks are an underrated source of trouble. What is printed on the carton should match the packing list, invoice and B/L exactly; when payment is by letter of credit and the L/C specifies marks, copy that text word for word so it does not become a documentary discrepancy. Consecutive carton numbers also make it easy to check for missing or damaged packages.

This generator lays out a 600 × 400 px label for you: the main mark in its frame, destination, PO number, carton number, weights, size in centimetres, an extra line and MADE IN INDONESIA, plus up to five simplified handling symbols based on ISO 780 (this way up, fragile, keep dry, use no hooks, do not stack). Download it as SVG or PNG, or print it directly. Make sure the content and symbols match your buyer's instructions and the nature of the goods.

Worked example

A furniture exporter ships 120 cartons to the buyer "ABC & Co" in Rotterdam. For the third carton:

  • Main mark: ABC & CO inside a diamond (upper case is applied automatically, the "&" prints safely)
  • Destination: ROTTERDAM
  • Carton number: C/NO. 3 OF 120
  • Gross weight: G.W. 12.5 KG; a 500 × 400 × 300 mm carton prints as MEAS. 50 × 40 × 30 CM
  • Origin: MADE IN INDONESIA, with the this way up and keep dry symbols

Print the series 1 to 120 with exactly the same content as the packing list.

Frequently asked questions

What should a shipping mark include?
Usually the buyer code (main mark), destination, PO number, carton number (C/NO. x OF n), net and gross weight, carton size and country of origin. Always follow the buyer’s instructions or L/C terms where they exist.
What is the difference between main marks and side marks?
Main marks identify the shipment: buyer code, destination and carton number. Side marks on another face usually carry weights and measurements.
Must the shipping mark match the packing list?
Yes. Carton marks should match the packing list, invoice and B/L. Under a letter of credit, a difference in marks can be treated as a documentary discrepancy.
What do the umbrella and arrow symbols on a carton mean?
The umbrella means keep dry, the two upward arrows mean this way up. Both are handling symbols covered by ISO 780.
Do I need to print MADE IN INDONESIA?
Many destination countries and buyers require country-of-origin marking on packaging. Check the rules of the destination country and your buyer’s instructions.
