About this calculator

Demurrage and detention are the two container delay charges that most often surprise importers. Both are charged by the shipping line when its containers are used longer than the free time granted, but they apply in different places. Demurrage runs while the full container stays inside the terminal or port depot after discharge, until it leaves through the gate. Detention runs once the container has been taken out of the terminal to your warehouse, until the empty is returned to the nominated depot. For exports the pattern is reversed: detention from empty pick-up, demurrage from gate-in of the full box until loading.

Some lines give separate free time for each (e.g. 4 days demurrage and 7 days detention), others a combined or merged free time (e.g. 14 days from discharge until the empty is back). After free time, daily rates are usually tiered: the first days are cheaper, then the rate steps up. Rates also differ for 20', 40', reefer and special equipment. On top of the line's charges, the terminal may bill its own storage.

This calculator counts the chargeable days from dates (discharge, gate-out, empty return) or straight from a number of days, then spreads them over rate tiers you can edit, for one container and for the whole shipment. Counting rules differ by carrier (whether the discharge day counts, calendar or working days), so match them to your tariff or contract.

Worked example

2 containers (20') stay 12 days in the terminal, demurrage free time 4 days, tiered rates: days 1–5 USD 25, days 6–10 USD 50, day 11 onwards USD 75 per container per day:

  • Chargeable days: 12 − 4 = 8 days
  • Tier 1: 5 days × 25 = USD 125; tier 2: 3 days × 50 = USD 150
  • Per container: USD 275; total for 2 containers: USD 550

If the delay grows to 15 chargeable days, the third tier kicks in: 5 × 25 + 5 × 50 + 5 × 75 = USD 750 per container.

How to use it

  1. Choose how to count days

Use dates (discharge, gate-out, empty return) or enter the days inside and outside the terminal directly.

  2. Choose the free time type

Pick separate free time for demurrage and detention, or combined free time as in the carrier's tariff.

  3. Enter the rate tiers

Enter the length of each tier (days) and the daily rate per container. Leave the last tier length empty so it runs on.

  4. Read the total

See the chargeable days, the breakdown per tier, the cost per container and the total for your number of containers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between demurrage and detention?
Demurrage applies while the full container is still in the terminal after free time; detention while it is outside the terminal until the empty is returned. Example: discharged 1 Nov, gate-out 12 Nov, returned 20 Nov — 12 days in the terminal and 9 days outside.
How are tiered rates calculated?
Chargeable days fill each tier in order. With 4 free days and 12 days used, 8 days are charged: 5 days × USD 25 + 3 days × USD 50 = USD 275 per container.
What is combined free time?
Combined free time treats demurrage and detention as one period, from discharge until the empty is returned. For example 14 combined days: if the container comes back on day 20, 6 days are charged at the combined rate.
Do the discharge day and Sundays count?
Usually calendar days are counted including the discharge day and holidays, but some carriers use working days or start counting the next day. This calculator counts calendar days inclusively; adjust if your tariff differs.
How can I reduce demurrage?
Prepare the import documents and duty payment before the vessel arrives, ask for extended free time at booking (often negotiable for volume), and schedule trucking and the empty return right after unloading at the warehouse.
