Detention
Detention is the charge a shipping line levies when its container is outside the terminal beyond the free time, for example at the consignee's warehouse for stripping, until it is returned empty to the depot. On exports, detention can run from empty pick-up until the full box gates in at the terminal. Rates are tiered per day and vary by carrier. Plan stripping and the empty return before the container leaves the port.
