TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit)
A TEU is the unit of capacity equal to one 20-foot container. A 40-foot box counts as 2 TEU and a 45-foot box is often counted as 2.25 TEU. Ship sizes, terminal capacity and port throughput are normally quoted in TEU. Keep in mind that a TEU counts slots, not weight or volume: one 20GP may hold 33 m³ of light cargo or up to about 28,250 kg of dense cargo, depending on the unit's CSC plate.
