About this calculator

BAPLIE (Bayplan/Stowage Plan Occupied and Empty Locations) is the UN/EDIFACT message that carriers, terminals and stowage centres use to exchange the contents of a container ship: every slot position, container number, ISO size-type, weight, ports of loading and discharge, operator, dangerous goods (DG), reefers and out-of-gauge cargo. The text format is dense, for example LOC+147+0020282::5', so it is hard to read without planning software.

This viewer reads BAPLIE 2.x (directory D.95B, including SMDG 2.2.1 with VGM) and BAPLIE 3.x (D.13B, SMDG 3.1.1) following the SMDG Message Implementation Guides. Once you pick a file you get a vessel and voyage summary, containers and TEU per port of discharge (POD), total weight, DG and reefer counts, and a bay plan view: a row × tier grid for every 40-foot bay, deck above and hold below, coloured by POD, operator, weight or cargo type. Click a slot to see the container details.

Automatic validation checks the UNT/UNZ control counts, mandatory segments, qualifier codes, the ISO 9711 position format (BBBRRTT), double-booked slots, 40-footers overlapping 20-foot cells, the ISO 6346 check digit and the SOLAS VGM status. Your file is never sent to a server or stored: all processing happens in your browser. Results can be exported to CSV for Excel. To plan the load, calculate stability and export a validated BAPLIE, continue in the Vessel Planner.

Worked example

A BAPLIE 2.2 fragment for one container:

LOC+147+0020282::5'
MEA+VGM++KGM:24713'
LOC+9+IDSUB'
LOC+11+IDBPN'
RFF+BM:1'
EQD+CN+CSQU3054383+45G1+++5'
NAD+CA+NBL:172:20'

The viewer reads it as: bay 002 (40-foot), row 02 (port), tier 82 (deck), container CSQU 305438 3 (check digit 3 is valid), type 45G1 = 40-foot high cube 9'6" (2 TEU), full, VGM 24.7 t verified, loaded in Surabaya (IDSUB), discharged in Balikpapan (IDBPN), operator NBL.

How to use it

  1. Choose a BAPLIE file

    Click "Choose file" or drop an .edi/.txt file on the upload box. You can also paste the EDIFACT text or load the fictitious sample.

  2. Read the summary and validation

    Check the BAPLIE version, vessel, voyage, containers per POD, weight, DG, reefers and the list of errors or warnings.

  3. Browse the bay plan

    Pick a bay, switch the colouring (POD, operator, weight, type) and click a slot to see the container number, ISO type, weight and ports.

  4. Export or continue

    Download a CSV for Excel, or open the Vessel Planner to plan the whole ship and export a validated BAPLIE.

Frequently asked questions

Is my BAPLIE file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and processed entirely in your browser with JavaScript. STOWAGE.ID does not receive or store any of its content.
Which BAPLIE versions are supported?
BAPLIE 2.0 to 2.2.1 (directory D.95B, codes SMDG20–SMDG22) and BAPLIE 3.0/3.1 (D.13B, SMDG30/SMDG31). The version is detected automatically from the UNH segment.
How do I read position 0020282?
The format is BBBRRTT under ISO 9711: bay 002 (the 40-foot slot over bays 001 and 003), row 02 (port side, second row from the centre line), tier 82 (first tier on deck). Odd rows are to starboard, hold tiers start at 02.
What does the VGM warning mean?
SOLAS requires a verified gross mass for every packed container. BAPLIE 2.2 uses MEA+VGM, BAPLIE 3 uses MEA+AAE+VGM. When the weight is sent as WT/AET the viewer marks it as not verified.
Why is there a check digit error?
The last digit of a container number is calculated from the first 10 characters under ISO 6346. An error means the number is probably mistyped; compare it with the booking, B/L and the box marking.
