About this calculator
Truck rates are often negotiated per trip, but a fair number is only possible when you know the cost structure. The largest item is usually diesel, followed by tolls, the driver and helper allowance, and vehicle cost (daily rental, or depreciation and maintenance for your own fleet). This calculator helps cargo owners judge a vendor's quote and helps fleet owners set rates that do not lose money.
Enter the one-way distance and choose whether the truck returns empty (round trip). Pick a truck type to fill in an indicative fuel economy in km per litre, then adjust it to your fleet data: a fully loaded truck on hilly roads can burn far more than the average figure. Trip days are counted from the distance driven per day, so the crew allowance and vehicle cost follow the length of the trip. Add tolls for the whole journey, loading and unloading, parking and levies, then your profit margin.
The result is the total trip cost, the cost per km, and the cost per tonne and per m³ when you enter the load, which makes it easy to compare with LCL or per-kg cargo rates. Mind the load limits too: a truck over its rated capacity or dimensions (ODOL) risks fines and damages the roads. Use the ODOL check and axle load calculator to make sure the load is safe before departure.
Worked example
Jakarta–Surabaya 780 km, round trip, Fuso 4.5 km/l, diesel Rp6,800/l, total tolls Rp3,000,000, 500 km per day, crew Rp250,000/day, vehicle Rp600,000/day, other costs Rp500,000, margin 10%, load 8 tonnes:
- Distance: 780 × 2 = 1,560 km; fuel 1,560 ÷ 4.5 = 346.67 l × 6,800 = Rp2,357,333
- Days: ⌈1,560 ÷ 500⌉ = 4 days → crew Rp1,000,000, vehicle Rp2,400,000
- Base cost: Rp9,257,333; margin 10% = Rp925,733
- Total: Rp10,183,067, or Rp6,528/km and Rp1,272,883/tonne
How to use it
Enter the route
Enter the one-way distance in km and tick round trip when the empty return is part of the cost.
Choose truck and fuel
Pick a truck type for an indicative fuel economy, then adjust km per litre and the diesel price you pay.
Add the other costs
Fill in tolls, crew allowance per day, vehicle cost per day, distance per day, other costs and margin.
Read the unit costs
Enter the load weight and volume to see cost per tonne and per m³ next to the total and per km.
