Balikpapan (Semayang & Kariangau)

Balikpapan is East Kalimantan's main sea gateway and is becoming more important as the new capital, Nusantara, is built in the same region. Port activity in the city is spread across several sites around Balikpapan Bay.

Semayang Port in the city centre handles general cargo and passengers under a Pelindo Multi Terminal branch. Containers are handled at Kariangau Terminal (KKT) on the western side of the bay, operated by PT Kaltim Kariangau Terminal, a Pelindo Terminal Petikemas subsidiary set up as a joint venture with the East Kalimantan provincial government and Perusda Melati Bhakti Satya. The whole port falls under PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 4, whose 2024 performance report named the capital-city project as a growth driver.

Balikpapan's UN/LOCODE is IDBPN. Inbound flows are dominated by construction materials, heavy equipment and consumer goods from Java, so many shipments are project cargo or move in open-top and flat-rack containers. Before shipping heavy equipment, check its dimensions and weight against quay capacity and handling gear, and make sure the truck route from Kariangau to the project site can take the load.
