Ternate (Ahmad Yani)

Ahmad Yani Port is in Ternate city, on a small volcanic island off the west coast of Halmahera, North Maluku. Small as it is, Ternate is the region's traditional trading centre and a distribution point for goods to Halmahera and other islands in the province.

The port falls under PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 4. Container services are handled at TPK Ternate; Pelindo Terminal Petikemas took over its management in 2023 with plans to improve services. Inbound cargo is dominated by consumer goods, building materials and staples, while outbound loads include commodities such as copra and seafood.

Ternate's UN/LOCODE is IDTTE. Because land on Ternate is limited, container yard space at the port is tight too, so collecting containers on time helps avoid storage charges and queues. Cargo owners forwarding goods to Halmahera should factor in the onward inter-island leg and extra handling charges. Halmahera itself has nickel-processing industrial estates with special terminals, so ask carriers whether a direct service to such a terminal suits your industrial cargo better than transit via Ternate.
