IDSOQ Indonesia Seaport Airport

Sorong

Sorong, Papua Barat Daya

About the port

Sorong Port lies on the Bird's Head of the island of New Guinea and now belongs to the province of Southwest Papua. It is the main entry point for staple goods, building materials and industrial supplies for Sorong and the surrounding regencies, and a stop for vessels serving other ports in Papua.

The port is managed by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 4, and container services are handled at TPK Sorong, operated by Pelindo Terminal Petikemas. The terminal handled 60,992 TEU in 2025, up from 54,422 TEU in 2024.

Sorong's UN/LOCODE is IDSOQ. Cargo flows to Papua are usually unbalanced: containers arrive full from Surabaya, Jakarta or Makassar and many go back empty. Rates and equipment availability can therefore differ by direction. For shippers, dense load planning matters to keep the cost per unit down, and consolidating several suppliers into one container is often cheaper than sending several half-full units. Also check vessel schedules, which can be several days apart on eastern routes, so a one-day delay in stuffing can push back arrival considerably.
