Tarakan (Malundung)

Malundung Port is in Lingkas Ujung, Tarakan city, on an island off the east coast of North Kalimantan. Tarakan is the largest city in Indonesia's youngest province, and its port is the main entry point for goods for Tarakan and mainland North Kalimantan areas such as Bulungan, Malinau and Nunukan.

The port is managed by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 4, and containers are handled at TPK Tarakan, operated by Pelindo Terminal Petikemas. Most services are domestic routes from Surabaya, Makassar and Balikpapan carrying consumer goods and building materials, while outbound cargo includes seafood and regional commodities.

Tarakan's UN/LOCODE is IDTRK. Because many final destinations are on mainland Kalimantan or other islands, goods are often transferred to smaller vessels or cargo speedboats after arriving in Tarakan. Account for the cost and time of that transfer, and pack goods so they can be handled in smaller units. Proximity to the Malaysian border also makes the area relevant for cross-border trade, which still requires complete customs documents.
