IDKOE Indonesia Seaport Airport

Kupang (Tenau)

Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur

About the port

Tenau Port is in the Alak district of Kupang city, at the western end of Timor island. It is the main sea gateway of East Nusa Tenggara province for containers and general cargo, and a distribution point to other islands in the archipelagic province such as Flores, Sumba, Alor and Rote.

The port falls under PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 3, and containers are handled at TPK Kupang, operated by Pelindo Terminal Petikemas. Tenau is currently a class III port; in December 2025 the local harbour authority (KSOP) proposed upgrading it to class I as activity grows.

Kupang's UN/LOCODE is IDKOE. Inbound cargo is mostly staples, building materials and consumer goods from Surabaya, while outbound loads include agricultural and livestock commodities. Because the province has a long dry season and the sea can be rough during the west monsoon, inter-island schedules may be disrupted; build buffer time into shipment plans. Kupang's proximity to Timor-Leste also makes it relevant for cross-border shipments, which need complete export documents and coordination with an agent in the destination country.
