IDKTJ Indonesia Seaport

Kuala Tanjung

Kabupaten Batu Bara, Sumatera Utara

About the port

Kuala Tanjung is in Batu Bara Regency, North Sumatra, on the Strait of Malacca about 90 kilometres (straight line) east of Medan. It was developed as a deep-sea port able to take larger ships than Belawan, with direct access to one of the busiest international shipping lanes.

Activity centres on the Kuala Tanjung Multipurpose Terminal (KTMT), operated by PT Prima Multi Terminal, a Pelindo Terminal Petikemas subsidiary. As a multipurpose terminal, KTMT handles containers, liquid bulk and general cargo. The surrounding area is also planned for industry, so the port is often discussed as part of plans to develop industrial estates on North Sumatra's east coast.

Kuala Tanjung's UN/LOCODE is IDKTJ; production release 2025-1 spells the name Kualatanjung, while UNECE's latest publication uses Kuala Tanjung. For North Sumatran exporters, Kuala Tanjung can be an alternative to Belawan, especially for liquid bulk and cargo from nearby industrial estates. Because regular container services are still smaller in volume, check vessel schedules and whether your chosen carrier actually calls here before switching routes. Include the road distance from factory to port in your total cost estimate.
