IDBLW Indonesia Seaport

Belawan

Medan, Sumatera Utara

About the port

Belawan Port lies in the Medan Belawan district, at a river mouth facing the Strait of Malacca about twenty kilometres north of central Medan. It is North Sumatra's main export-import gateway, serving plantation commodities, industrial goods and consumer cargo for the surrounding region.

The port is managed by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 1. International container services are handled at BNCT (Belawan New Container Terminal), operated by PT Prima Terminal Petikemas, a Pelindo Terminal Petikemas subsidiary, while the domestic container terminal has been run by PT Prima Multi Terminal since 1 April 2023. Non-container cargo such as bulk and general cargo is handled by the Pelindo Multi Terminal branch in Belawan. In June 2023 Prima Terminal Petikemas signed a shareholders agreement with the INA–DP World consortium to develop BNCT.

The port's UN/LOCODE is IDBLW. Because Belawan sits on the Strait of Malacca, many export loads travel on feeder vessels to Port Klang, Tanjung Pelepas or Singapore before continuing to their final destination. Before stuffing, check the feeder schedule, the documentation cut-off and reefer equipment availability if you ship temperature-controlled products.
